About Us

The Steinbruck Center has operated as a service-learning hostel ministry since 2001. Founded by members of Luther Place Memorial Church, it continues to engage the congregation in learning, serving, and justice seeking. Youth, campus ministry, and protest groups can participate in our programming and/or utilize our hostel space.

Guiding principles that orient and root the work of the Steinbruck Center:

  • Be Theologically Explicit

We as followers of Jesus Christ feel called to support the formation of the Beloved Community, while we continue to let our faith compel us to learn about and challenge injustice with integrity.

  • Be Grounded in Humility

While acknowledging that while we have much to celebrate in our history and a unique perspective in the nation’s capital, we remain open to new information, experiences, and perspectives of others.

  • Support Continuous Learning

We work to unearth our unconscious assumptions, identify our blind spots, leverage our privilege for the well-being of all, so that new understandings can emerge through the movement of the Spirit.

  • Require Ongoing Repentance

We repent for the ways we – both in the past and in the present – contribute to the very social ills that we aim to challenge and transform through the work of the Steinbruck Center.
